- Upload the photo you want to convert.
- Choose Lithophane (a variable-thickness panel meant to be backlit, so the picture appears when light shines through it) or Relief (an embossed, top-lit plaque instead).
- Set the thinnest/thickest points (lithophane) or the relief height (relief), and pick a detail level.
- Set the panel's width, height, and frame thickness, then pick sharp or rounded corners.
- Optionally add a hanging or mounting hole — the photo area automatically shifts to avoid it.
- Drag to rotate and scroll to zoom the live 3D preview, then click Download STL to get a file ready to slice and print.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No — the photo is processed and the 3D model is built and exported entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
What file format does this export?
A standard binary STL file — the format nearly every 3D printer and slicer (Cura, PrusaSlicer, and similar) expects.
What's the difference between Lithophane and Relief?
Lithophane varies the panel's own thickness — thin where the photo is bright, thick where it's dark by default — so the image only really appears when the panel is lit from behind, the classic "photo in plastic" effect. Relief instead raises the surface like an embossed plaque, meant to be viewed under ordinary light from the front.
Why does my photo get cropped?
The photo area keeps its own rectangle within the panel and center-crops your photo to fit that rectangle's proportions (the same "fill the frame" behavior as a photo app's crop-to-fit) — adjust the panel's width and height to change that rectangle's aspect ratio.
What does "Detail level" change?
It sets how many sample points the photo is converted into — higher detail resolves finer texture but produces a larger, more complex 3D model. Medium is a good default; drop to Low on a slower device or if the exported file feels too large.
Do I need a 3D printer to use this?
You'll need access to one (your own, a friend's, a local makerspace, or a print-on-demand service) to actually print the exported STL file — this tool only designs and exports it.
